Nestin’

Jill and I are consolidating stuff and making room for the newest Holt. Of course, I’m always on the lookout for smaller, more portable geeky things. I’m trading in my Mac Pro for a new iMac to save some space (and because it’s a great-looking machine). I traded in my 8-channel firewire interface for a small 4-channel mixer that doubles as a USB interface for recording. Over the past two years (before we knew about the baby) I’ve consolidated my guitar collection to only three guitars and two cases.

Being a very organized and semi-OCD person, I like order and simplicity while also being a geek. I’m willing to pay extra for smaller, lighter, less obtrusive things.

One thing I can’t consolidate is my bag of wires, adapters, and cables. I’ve discovered that many guys have such a collection just like many have a tool collection. You just never know when you’ll need that XLR to 1/4” cable or RCA adapter, you know?

Here’s a short, silly song I made on my new mixer about Ubu, the Catweasel.

Sad or Funny?

Jill and I watched this yesterday. She went from laughing hysterically to sad faces and saying “awwww”.

Trip to Brigham & Womens

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Made it successfully in and out of the city today, with the help of my sister Jen and her savvy driving skills. The second ultrasound went fine, the Dr. actually didn’t see the ecogenic focus in the heart, but saw one somewhere else. These are very common though, and they often disappear. So, no problems really. So far the blood work has come out showing no issues, so nothing major. And the good news is that ‘the wiggler’ has actually moved quite a bit and is more head down. Thanks everyone for the notes, prayers and well wishes! May 18th here we come! :)

Ben and Jill and Bun

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

I had the cutest voice mail from my nephew wishing us a Happy New Year, and it was followed by my brother giving his regards to “Jill & Ben & Bun” with a chuckle. I liked that :)

This week we had our mid-way ultrasound. Here’s the cute little footprint. Actually, the 2 feet are there, kinda one over the other.

Here’s the other pic of the little head with a hand up. It was definitely a neat experience to see the baby moving around and all the little parts! We are waiting to find out the gender, so nothing was determined about that. The things of note are that there was an ecogenic focus in the heart. This is not a main concern, just something common in Downs, so takes our risk for that up by a half a percentage. The other thing is an unidentified mass in the abdomen. I will go into Brigham and Women’s hospital this Tuesday for a follow up. A level 2 ultrasound will look more closely at these issues. I have a peace about it though, really not too worried. More concerned about getting into Boston during rush hour! We’ve really felt God’s hand over us and the baby all this pregnancy and know that he goes before us with still.

Also, for any Mom readers out there. I have an anterior placenta, which isn’t a major issue, the placenta can form anywhere. But, I guess it is a little less common. Anyone else out there who had this? And, the baby is also in breech position, which isn’t a concern because I’m in 2nd trimester, but I’m still interested in hearing if other women had experience with this. How do you help your little baby move to a new position?

Love Always Trusts?

Monday, January 4th, 2010

I just finished reading The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky this week. It was a bit hard to follow for me because of all the characters. It was written in the 1800′s, but I was proud to make it through and enjoyed it.

The main character, Prince Myshkin (AKA the Idiot), is a neat character. He’s gullible, far too trusting, naïve, and never suspects evil of anyone unless it’s thrown in his face. He’s really very smart, intellectual, and perceptive. People are attracted to him because he genuinely cares about them without being suspicious or manipulative. He’s always ready to see the good in people and to praise instead of criticize. Getting to know Myshkin (who has been cited as a Christ-like figure) made me think of the verses about love in 1 Corinthians:

“It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” -1Cor 13:7

That’s part of a longer, well-known section about love that is read at many weddings.

So last night in church I brought up the question: What does “always trusts” mean? If we are supposed to love our neighbors, does that mean that we have to trust them, even if they prove themselves un-trustworthy? Does it mean just generally giving people the benefit of the doubt when we are suspicious? What about when people take advantage of us or abuse us? I don’t know the answer yet, I’ve been pondering it for a couple days and comparing it against what wise people say and other verses I know.

Prince Myshkin spent a lot of time with children, and is in some ways very similar to a child. A child loves unconditionally and can’t even fathom that those he loves could do anything wrong or betray them. Even after something bad is done to them, they readily forgive and are ready to trust again. Are we, like little children, supposed to do the same?
