Christmas, Birthday, New Pedal Setup

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Christmas was great.  We hung around here awhile and listened to the new hymn album I made Jill a bit and enjoyed the day.  Then we headed over to the Merrills for lunch and snow fun.  My arm got tired from throwing snowballs at the Nathan, Matthew, Mark, Ed, Steve, Julie, and Jill!

My birthday was today.  Most of the day we hung out here, which ranks among my favorite activities!  This evening we went out to dinner with Nate, Caroline, and Ryan.  It was really great.  Jill, Nate, and Ryan had lengthy toasts and heartfelt encouragement prepared in my honor, and I felt a little embarrassed but very happy to receive them all!  What can you say about such friends?  I am truly blessed by knowing them. Combine all this with pizza and beer, and you have a very memorable evening.

I had asked for no presents this year, and most people were happy to oblige me.  My biological grandmother sent me a shirt that says “Redheads are Hot” in bright red lettering.  I wore it this evening :)

Warning:  Guitar Geekery Section Ahead

Recently I traded in my rack setup for a pedalboard and pedal setup.  I was very proud of my rack system, but I wasn’t excited about lugging around the heavy 6-space rack and extra stuff.  So I sold all the stuff and have been buying other things.  The first thing about pedals is they’re more expensive than the all-in-one units I’ve owned in the past.  So I can’t afford a lot of individual pedals, but the ones I was able to get so far I’m insanely happy with.  So far I have:

Tech21 SansAmp Tri-AC - preamp, tube amp emulation, distortion

Eventide TimeFactor - extraordinary delay effects unit

Pedaltrain 2 with Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 - what holds the pedals in place, powers them, and lets me carry them around

So far I’m very happy with this setup.  The Eventide unit was expensive (their cheapest rack unit is $2,000 or so, but this was fortunately much cheaper than that).  With just these two pedals I can get almost any tube-driven distortion/overdrive sound, and many kinds of lush reverb and delays (even some modulation effects).

Another thing the TimeFactor can do is loop.  It’s only 12 seconds, but it’s not a looper pedal, so this is just icing.  But it is very fun to play with.  It’s like having a guitar slave.  I can tell the pedal, “Play G and C for three hours and don’t stop!” and he complies instantly.  If only I had a drummer slave like that!  For fun, I recorded some of my impromptu jams today.  These were all spontaneous and have no mixing or editing – this is what it actually sounds like in my living room as I play.

Merry Christmas

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

It has been fun anticipating Christmas 2008. This year I got really into miniatures and had fun making decorations for my tiny tree, and a little friendly snowman. Ornaments are made from little beads, little paper garland that I made during the power outage, and christmas tree lights from a co-worker.

Here’s how I displayed my Christmas cards this year, just hung them from a piece of ribbon.

And here is Ben’s Christmas poncho that I crocheted!

Merry Christmas :)

No Powah!

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

On Thursday night, as I was sitting reading a book at 2AM in the morning, the power flickered briefly and went out.  As of Sunday afternoon, it’s still not back on!  There was a severe ice storm and more than a million people in New England are without power.  Most of our resident condo dwellers have long ago departed to seek warmer climes, but Jill and I have spent three days and nights without power in freezing weather!

Friday night we went out to pizza, as the town next to us had power.  All the restaurants were very crowded as immigrants from towns without power arrived for light, heat, and food.  Then Jill and I went to KMart, bought candles, and brushed our teeth.  Friday night was not that cold.

On Saturday we visited my in-laws and took showers, which was awesome!  I felt soo clean.

On Saturday night Jill and I played with our band in another town with power.  We did pretty well from what people said.  I should have some pictures soon.  We were hopeful that we’d have power when we got home, but it was still dark in our neighborhood.  Even less people had stuck around than the day before, but a few windows still remained lit by candlelight or generator-produced electric lights.

It was very cold last night.  It’s a good thing jill is such a good snuggler, or we might have become blocks of ice overnight.  It was hard to get up this morning because of all the dissipating heat.  Today we took a walk in the freezing air to get warm, and now we’re at a local coffee shop.  We’re still hoping power will be back for church tonight, but if not we will have an intimate fire-lit meeting at Hannah’s house!

One problem is the, um, toilet.  No power = no running water in our place, so for days we couldn’t flush.  It was pretty gross.  But then we got a five-gallon bucket from our relatives, and I filled it at a local stream and lugged it home.  So we were finally able to flush, even though each flush is quite a lot of work!  Yay!

None of our neighbors have power, and it’s interesting how we have all actually spoken to each other in the past few days.  On Friday night I spent a few hours talking to our Jewish neighbor about the Bible and Jewish history.  On Saturday several neighbors were outdoors trading news and stories.  Normally here in MA, barely anyone speaks to each other.  So while it’s very cold and that is hard to bear, everything else has been ok and even beneficial to our community.

The last two nights I took a walk, and God provided a beautiful full moon at just the right time for this “crisis”.  It was really nice out!  There were no lights to obscure the moonlight, so everything was bathed in a bright, mystic blue glow.  No flashlight needed!

Gear and Gigs

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Well, I finished my rack-mounted rig, and very soon after decided to sell the whole thing and get a floor-based pedal setup.  I just can’t seem to be content with the gear I have yet!  This decision was mostly because of the weight of a full 6-space rack unit, which is hard to lug around.  I’m kind of new to a pedal setup and I really hope I like it.  I sure hope so after all the money it costs to switch!  I’ll publish all the new gear after it gets here and I set stuff up.  I will miss all the gear I’ve collected – the Tech21 PSA-1, TC Electronics G-Sharp, and the ISP Decimator Pro Rack G most of all.

I also recently traded in my Les Paul Studio!  Yeah, I know.  Several friends said they had known me playing that guitar since they knew me, and I felt a bit nostalgic about it too.  But there was a guy on Craigslist that was trading TWO guitars for a Les Paul, and I was intrigued.  I’ve had my LP almost since I started playing, probably since 1996 or so, and it was a bit rough around the edges.  Also I was looking for something lighter.

So this guy traded me two guitars worth a combined total of more than my LP would sell for used.  He just loves LPs, and so it was worth more to him than the other two he had.  Here’s what I got (both in very new condition and with hardshell cases):

Ibanez Iceman IC400

Hagstrom Ultra Swede

The Hagstrom resembles my LP, but it’s lighter and much newer than mine was.  Very shiny!  The Iceman was waaay too metal for me and I wasn’t very comfortable playing it.  So I sold it and bought this:

Ibanez S320

This new one came in the mail last week, and I love it!  Sounds and looks great, and I wanted an electric with a floating bridge.  I finally have two great-looking electrics that are very fun to play!

Finally, Sugar Road is playing this weekend at Panache in Framingham at 7:00.
