Candy Cane Cosmo

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Tonight we went out to eat at Not Your Average Joes. If you Join their mailing list you receive a birthday coupon for a free entree during the week of your birthday! So, we went tonight for Ben’s birthday dinner and I was excited to say my favorite drink on the menu – the candy cane cosmo! I had ordered this last year when we went for Ben’s birthday and it was so yummy! But it is only on the menu this time of year. So we inquired about the recipe for it and found out that our neighbor was the bartender :) and she gave us a print out of the recipe! We then headed over to the liquor store to get some of the ingredients:

Vanilla vodka
baileys chocolate mint
peppermint schnapps
and the only things we didn’t find is the chocolate-peppermint stirrings

The dude at the liquor store helped us find stuff, we were fairly clueless on where to find everything! It was fun though, now we can make our own candy cane cosmos for a special treat!

Kazarolling 2007

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Our Second Annual Kazarolling was last night! We met in our church’s parking lot and proceeded to accost many houses on several side streets throughout the neighborhood.

Reactions, like last year, were varied. A couple people actually closed the door on us in the middle of a song. Most people were happy to see us kazooing and called the other members of their families to hear. The best had to be a family with little kids that kept jumping up and down while we were performing. One family tried to give us money (our bucket full of kazoos was probably misleading). Overall, responses were favorable and we could hear many people saying as we walked away that we were great and what a good idea!

This year we had Nathan, Paul & Liz & Jonathan, Chip, Jeff, and Jill and I. We’ll be doing this again next year, so be ready!

Pictures are here!

Snow & Ice

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

We’ve been hit with a few snowstorms this week. Once we got about a foot of snow at one time and there’s a minimum of two feet of snow on the ground (I just measured it on our porch – 24 inches). here’s some pictures of our little Beetle and a huge icicle right outside our porch door!

This was just today’s snow!

We apologize to our new england friends who deal with this stuff every day and get sick of it, but we figured our friends in Florida, Texas, and California would like to see!

Job Interview

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

No, Ben doesn’t have one or anything.  Jill and I love this Monty Python sketch, it’s hilarious!  We watched it tonight and I figured I’d post it.  Also, our Kazarroling event is Saturday!  We’ve had a few couples/families sign up, so if you haven’t responded or received an invitation, let us know!  Last year was lots of fun.

Thanks for the comments in our last blog post as well.

Conflict and its End

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Conflict is hard for many people to deal with.  I’ve realized that the closer you get to people, the more inevitable it is.  Also, due to our personalities, childhood, parents, and experiences, it becomes very hard to deal with in constructive ways.

Jill works in special education, and she does this all day.  That is, she helps people resolve their conflicts.  It’s really valued at the school she works at.  She’s more of an expert at it than most people.

I’m pretty bad at doing this, but this week was quite a lesson in it.  We spent around four hours at a restaurant talking things out with our small group leaders.  I was exhausted by the end (not from yelling or anything, I just get that way after talking with anyone for that long).  Things are better for the time spent hashing things out.  Even better, we’re still friends with the couple, which is very valuable to us.

Also, Jill and I went to a marriage counseling session tonight with a nice older guy who’s a pastor as well.  Jill and I are doing fine generally, but as she has pointed out it’s good to smooth out bumps as they come along.  Things like… resolving conflict :)  Being willing to do this took a lot of guts for me as talking about shortcomings or faults is tough.  Fortunately the pastor was very encouraging and said we seem like a very healthy couple etc etc.

All this talk of feelings and faults makes me tired, and sometimes discouraged. Fortunately God has kept his promise that nothing he puts in front of me is too difficult to handle.  Whatever doesn’t kill me will hopefully cause me to be stronger and improve in some small area.  God is in the business of making me more like him, however hard a process that is (and believe me it is hard sometimes).

One of my quotes in my database that I love is from a song called “Love”:

The Harvester is near
His blade is on your skin
To plant a new beginning
Well then let the cut begin
Let the cut begin

Crafter Advice

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

After a week of various craft experiences I have learned some things:

1. Craft fairs can be hit or miss. Location is key, and the closer to Boston the better (i.e. Pepperell is pretty far outside of Boston!). If a fair is an annual one then it tends to have a good turnout. Ones that are new, like mine in Pepperell, don’t tend to bring as many people in. I talked with a lot of other vendors at my fair and they gave me a lot of advice based on their experiences.

2. Word-of-mouth is the strongest marketing strategy! I spend 5 hours at that craft fair and didn’t make enough to cover my $20 table. However, tonight I went to our Young Life Christmas dinner and through word of mouth, and a quick run back home to get my goods, I sold 6 bags and 3 record bowls! Yipee! I was so encouraged by everyones feedback :)

3. You never know what certain people are going to like. At the fair I had one bag that I kept hidden in the box because I thought it seemed crooked. Later on I took it out and my neighboring vendor told me it was her favorite! Tonight it was of the first ones to sell. Some people like long handles, some go for the stripes, and some many people didn’t even look twice at the one which I love the most (and am glad that I get to keep toteing my lunch in it!) So, I reccomend variety and that when given the opportunity to put out everything you got!

That’s all folks!

Craft Fair

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Tomorrow from 9-2 I’ll be doing a craft fair in Pepperell, MA, at the VFW. It is located at 55 leighton st. (rt. 113) just in case anyone HAPPENED to be around and wanted to stop by! I’m feeling a bit shy about the whole thing, but also fairly excited, so should be an interesting day!
