Ben and Dan Hike Mt. Cannon

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Using some mysterious voodoo powers, Dan somehow got me up at 6:00 AM on Thursday to drive 1.5 hours to Mt. Cannon in New Hampshire. There are tons of mountains in this area, and Mt. Washington is about 50 miles east. Or west, I’m not good with geography.

The hike was fun and I kept up with Dan fairly well once I got my pace right – he’s somewhat of a regular to these mountains. The trail is around 2.5 miles and the peak is 4,400 ft. or thereabouts.

You can see pictures here although my camera can’t really capture the beauty of the scenery at the top!

An Evening in Boston :)

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Friday night Ben and I went into boston with Ed (my brother-in-law) to see a show at the Regatta Bar. Ed is one of the most generous people we know. He treated us, gave us a ride in, and really put the whole evening together.  The evening began with indian food in Harvard Square, meeting different friends of Ed’s, and catching up with old ones (ryan). After dinner we headed over to the Regatta Bar, which was a pretty classy place!  We got a table in the second row and got to hear Bill Frisell, who I really enjoyed a lot.  To me he was kinda of like Erroll Garner in that he played popular tunes/standsard but did his own jazzy rythms and creative noodling. I havn’t been out to a music venue since in a long time, and it was really fun.

Another year older

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

We had a good flag day here :)   I turned 28 and was able to embrace it :) Last year I had a hard time during my birthday with the whole getting older thing. I guess we all have certain ideas/expectations about what a certain age might bring.  For some reason 27 was the age that my brain had decided was the age to start a family.  I guess I had a whole year to work on my contentment and having peace with God’s timing.  This year is also different because for the first time I am super-excited about a career path.  I have already been doing research and reading…and havn’t started classes yet.  I hope to start in the fall, though at URI, not at Simmons because of finances. So, just waiting for something official to arrive in the mail!

So I had a great birthday. It was complete with my dinner at Not Your Average Joes and happy celebrating with our journey group. Thanks all for the birthday wishes! And I hope everyone had a good Flag Day :)

Ben’s Rig

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Every geek takes pride in his personal space. Some are neat and organized, while others are messy; but each one will spend hours getting it “just right”. For those that happen to be a tad bit obsessive compulsive, you may find them agonizing over the way their electrical cords look or making sure things are always at right angles on their desks (you laugh, but I just paused there to make sure my monitor was aligned correctly). Why? Because for a geek, things like the way your desktop looks or which gadgets you have on display or which operating system you use is an extension of who you are.

With this in mind, I spent some time on my “rig” tonight. Some time ago I had an idea for some LED rope lights for my amp. I spent around $25 for them – they’re expensive but look *great*. They came today and I set them up. Then I had a great idea for getting my amp off the ground using my keyboard stand. The end result makes me proud of my “geek corner”! I’m confident this setup will look great at any future gigs, too.

Busy June!

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

June has come in with a *bang*, and a *ball*  We had a blast today playing the ever-so-fun game, “Ball”.  Followed by some MSTK Merlin’s Shop of Mysical Wonders :)   Good times.  Besides that we’ve been very busy lately.  I went to the Swain’s graduation party today and got to visit with lots of folks. Yesterday was Steve & Danielle’s awesome wedding, followed by Townsend’s  275th which Ben was playing in (Chad Burdick band).  The celebration got pretty much rained out and there wasn’t much of a crowd, but we did get to visit with Elisha & Dave who came to see Trebek. That was cool :) Then we back up to Friday where I had a job interview at a school library and it seemed to go pretty well… stay tuned :)

Busy But Successful

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

The guitar presentations went well.  Some of the duets were a bit off, and I didn’t say anything to the audience (someone introduced us), but overall it went really well.  One of my students played a great rendition of “Iron Man” with lots of distortion.  The students all thought it was really cool, just hoping the parents did too :)   Before the show was really hectic – trying to get them all together, tuned up, dealing with broken strings, last minute practicing, getting on and off stage quickly, and handing out encouragement!  Here’s a few pix:

Tonight Jill and I rushed off to Townsend’s 275th anniversary town fair-type of event.  On the positive side, the show went great.  I played well with only a few mistakes.  We saw many of the same people/bands that were at the last show I played in that Mike got me into.  On the negative side, there were only about five people AT the show besides people playing.  Tomorrow we play outside so there should be more interest.

Last Post Is True

We had the dress rehearsal at my school yesterday for the performance tonight.  It went better than I expected!  I have about six students playing, and proud of them all.  Coming up are TWO Chad Burdick gigs, Steve & Danielle’s wedding, and of course the show by my students.  A week full of performances and practices.

Busy Week

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

This is a busy week for me. Today we got up early and got to church at 8:45. I played in two services and taught a lesson after that. I was asked to possibly play in a wedding in August as well. Then at 5:30 I had a practice session for my next Chad Burdick gig. We have another practice on Wednesday and our performance is this Saturday (along with our friends’ wedding). This week I have my teaching job, lessons, jury duty, a dentist appointment, small group, and a recital for kids at my school on Thursday. This latter event makes me nervous, and I need to get as much practice in with the kids playing as possible.
