Programming Lots

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Yep, I’ve been programming for almost 3 days straight – although I did take breaks to read to Jill and mountain bike with her this morning. And we did go out Sunday night with a bunch of friends. Other than that, lotsa code for Ben.

I’ve been working on my finance program. I fixed some bugs and added some graphs – thanks to a free utility called Ploticus. I also added two new reports – the YTD summary and a category detail report. Finally, I added spiffy headings with another free utility called Figlet. Here’s some screenshots of the program in action:

I’m wondering how professionals view shell scripting for projects like this. I know Perl would do this kind of thing very nicely, but I just don’t know it well enough – or C for that matter. The only complaint I have about it now is the speed – the reports take around 5-10 seconds to generate. I’m not sure why, but I use stuff like cat, grep, and awk extensively.
Anyway, if anyone wants to download and critique my program, shoot me an email.

Officially Summer Vacation!

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

Yay! I am officially on summer vacation! :) The kids had their last day on wednesday, and staff finished up friday, staff party and all. It was the most sentimental end of the year for me b/c of kids I have had relationships with and staff whom i love that aren’t returning. Julie was my date at the staff party, and i even wore my hair down to show off my new do, cut by Susie.

Saturday

It was “Fifer’s Day” in Boxborough, which was a fair Jill and I and our neighbor Kelly went to (Jill and I biked).  Mostly we went to play volleyball, but everyone seemed to have a team already made and a tournament going, so we played with some junior high girls.  Mark Marlow, my friend from an old job, showed up too and played for a bit.  I love sports so I played for over 2 hours, and then we biked home.

In the morning before my lessons, Jill went to a yard sale and found a guitar pretty cheap.  I’ve been wanting an Ibanez-style guitar for a while, and so I went over and bought it and an amp for $60.  It’s a pretty cheap, no-name guitar, but with new strings and some modifications it plays nicely.  I played it in church today with no problems.

Nice Evening & Teaching & Booze

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Tonight Jill and I went for a long bike ride on back roads and looked at yards and houses. We ended up at a small restaurant and had an ice cream treat. Then we biked to the liquor store and bought some beer and vodka since we live really close. I’ve been making Jill and I mixed drinks like Cape Codders and Pina Coladas. We also like sake when we go out for sushi. Neither of us has ever been drunk, but drinking has a fun, cultured appeal similar to what wine snobs must experience. And we really think certain drinks are yummy. My favorite drink is probably still 100% grape juice. Ironically, it can be more expensive than bulk wine!

Today was one of my student’s last days – he’s moving to Florida for college. A lot of students have come and gone over 7 years. I’ve taught a classroom full of people, one by one! This fall, I’ll have many more students due to the after-school program I was hired for – probably 10-15 more. All of them are in junior high. Unlike the poor teachers, I get small groups or single students to teach. I don’t envy people that have to deal with a group of 25 hormonal pre-teens. One on one they are great, which is why I love teaching lessons.

Oh, and before I forget. Yesterday was Jill’s birthday! We went out for sushi (with sake of course) and saw “Cars”, which Jill thought was great. I liked it moderately well too. Jill is, uh, 22. Yeah, 22.

Irreverence

Sunday, June 11th, 2006

Today I was hanging out with my buddy Dan at church. He plays the bass and we have toyed with the idea of playing jazz at restaurants for fun. Today he said, “I’ve figured out why I like hanging out with Ben. He has a complete irreverence for just about everything.” Haha! Good or bad? I haven’t figured that out yet :)

Old Radio Shows

Sunday, June 4th, 2006

Jill and I listened to an old radio show from around 1944 today. It featured Abbot & Costello and an actress named Veronica Lake. It was funny how there is only one sponsor for each show – on this one it was Camel, a cigarette company. In light of what we know today about cigarettes, this clip was pretty funny:

Camel Ad

You can find more radio shows at this link. There’s a free podcast too (that’s where we heard it). It’s interesting to be entertained by something that was on the air 60 years ago.
