Oh, The Places I’ve Been

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Is that a Dr. Suess book? something like that is…. can’t quite remember.

Anyways, this week has been so great! So great. I have been to some neato places in the past few days: Thursday I went with my friend Shannon to Lowell and hit the Revolving Museum – pretty cool place! It’s free, and they have some neato stuff! Not too big, doesn’t take long to get through it. But if you get some of the artist scooop/background from the folks there it makes it extra interesing. check it out. We also hit a good consignment shops in chelmsford on the way home – love ‘em!

That evening was Ignite the awesome inter-college-christian-thing they have out in Worchester! Great people, and the band really rocked out this week! I really enjoyed being there. Got to meet a lot of people.

Then i saw many of them again tonight at the Olive Branch in Northboro…their website isn’t working right now…but its a great place. Our friends Renee & Cassie played tonight and rocked the “ugly mug cafe” which provided me a yummy straight-from-the-oven cookie! Julie, Faith and I went over the see the sights :)

Today i also got to go to the IMAX Theater and see the Deep Sea 3D show. Got beads and 3d glasses….it was great! And, i went to the luxurious Papa Ginos in Hudson so participate in the wonderful service they have there :)

And now, it is good to be home. I think i will settle down and read. I am currently addicted to “Captivating” a book by John and Stasi Eldredge. And awesome womeney (what a yuckey looking word!) book. :)

Jill’s Victorious Elf

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

Ben says, “Maybe you can blog about our trip to the Olive Branch”. No, no. He is just trying to distract me from writing about the strategy computer came which he just lost!! We’ve been playing the “Battle of Wesnoth” a few times this week, and just minutes ago my elf warrior took down his elfie king! Haha! Victory is mine! Gloat I shall :) becuase Ben is pretty much the mac daddy-o of computer games. So this is a rare moment.

Also, i guess I will mention a bit about the Olive Branch. It is this awesome Christian bookstore in Northboro and Ben and our friend Jeff played there Saturday night. They did some covers and some original tunes. Personally i liked Ben’s classy rendidion of a whistly “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” :) It was fun! Ben has a great stage presence, and he is witty and tells clever things between tunes to get the audience laughing. I think i like that guy… :)

Week of Fun

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Jill has school vacation this week, and since I don’t do much except a lesson here or there, we’ve had much of the week together. It’s like being retired, only we’re in our twenties. We like it! Tuesday we went on a bike ride, had a picnic, played computer games, and stayed late at karate. Wednesday we ate out and saw a movie. Today we will probably go to Ignite, a music/worship event for college kids that my best friend plays at.

Mike at church today said he heard about a study that was done that found that D.I.N.Ks (Double Income No Kids) were the happiest group of people. I don’t know if that’s true, but we are having a great time :P

Old School Games

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

I’ve been playing compouter games for awhile now, and I’ve had Angband for years (formerly called MacMoria). It’s a role-playing game that’s only a few years newer than Zork, a text adventure game released in 1979 (that is ancient in computer game history).

I don’t know what makes this game so fun, but I’m playing it right now instead of Warcraft, which has amazing graphics and community play:

A screenshot of World of Warcraft

A screenshot of Angband

Wow, games have come a long way in 15 years. In Angband, you are an “at” symbol (@) running around instead of a full 3D model. The thing is, the old game is just as fun as the new one! I guess it leaves more to the imagination?

Wikipedia has its own entry on Angband here. I met a guy in college who still plays this text-based game a lot!

Vacation is Here

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Been a while since i blogged, so thought i would give an update! Ben’s teaching in the other room, so i am camping out in here for the next 45. School vacation officially starts tomorrow after my community visits with kids, then i am off and running! We are excited to have Ben’s sister Kerris and her beau visit us for the weekend :) the only problem is that they don’t like sushi! sheesh! we might have to drag them out…and make them reat only rice? hmmm. Other than that all i have planned over vacation is going to see ice age 2 with ben and plaster fun time with Nathan :) just plan on relaxing :) which i guess i need to do. I have had some stinky health problems in the last….6 weeks i guess. But, so far test are coming back normal, so i guess that it good, suppose to have 1 more done, and am kinda putting it off because it is unpleasant, $, and i keep justifying that i am doing better. So, thats my excitement. Also, my new earth shoes arrived yesterday! wee! I love em :)

Chicken Little

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Jill and I saw this movie for fun, but there’s many reasons I didn’t like it and kids’ movies like it. Here’s why:

1) TV and movies today change scenes much faster. I read about this in Culture Jam. It suggests that people today have shorter attention spans and so keeping someone’s interest is done by changing scenes often. The mind must continually reacclimate itself, so you are less likely to change the channel or get bored. Try watching some old black & white shows or movies, and then turn on MTV for 2 minutes and you will see the difference almost immediately.

Chicken Little opens with a huge action scene which jumps from scene to scene roughly every 2 seconds. To me it’s awful, my feeble mind can’t seem to keep up.

2) Much of the music is rock or pop based. This is also distracting to me… I miss kids’ movies with an orchestras, jazz choirs, and beautiful singing. Compare this to this – both are opening songs for successful movies, but in different decades.

3) The theme/moral values of today don’t want to offend, they want to be cool, or empower kids to do what they want. Compare the Jungle Book (1967) – “If you do what you want despite good advice to the contrary, you may end up getting your friends killed,” to Chicken Little – “If your parents don’t believe you when you tell them something, it’s their fault and they will probably end up apologizing later.” There is some stuff about sharing feelings and talking things over. That’s decent I guess, but the majority of morals/lessons today don’t want to offend, lest their small audience think it uncool.

4) A surprising amount of adult themes have been introduced into “kid” movies. In Chicken Little, at least four people are vaporized by mean-looking aliens. You learn later that they weren’t killed, but I could see how it would be scary at the time. Chicken Little gives Ducky Wucky a drawn-out kiss. There is kissing in older kids’ movies too (like Sleeping Beauty), but it doesn’t seem the same somehow. Jill and I were grossed out. Some kid movies have nasty language that I was absolutely forbidden to say growing up. Example from Shrek: “Please keep off of the grass, shine your shoes, wipe your – face.” That’s funny to me, but I wouldn’t want a child inferring what was left out. Also from Shrek: “Well, I have to save my ass.”

Well that’s my rant about movies. If I ever have kids, I’ll make them watch movies like Winnie the Pooh, Snow White, and Bambi.
