A fun Weekend!

Saturday, July 30th, 2005

Last night we had a little girls night with Young Life friends. It was very fun, my friend Linda led us in a bodyshop foot spa and we had lots of laughs. We learned that 90% of household dust is dead skin cells, and that every day our feet sweat an average of 1 cup. Ewwwww!
Then today I took the boys out for some fun. We went to a great place – Honey Pot Orchards Honey Pot Orchards It was the most frugal fun I have had with children for a while! for $1.50 a child can try the mazes, the hedge maze and the tunnel maze. we couldn’t make our way through the hedge maze, but the boys loved the tunnell maze (made out of large boxes!) and they couldn’t get enough of it. We got to sample a free apple, and then we spent $.75. So the grand total for our fun time was a whopping $3.75, i highly reccomend it!
Lastly, for lunch, I hit Savory Lane in acton – the cutest place! basic sandwich kinda place, but cute stuff, like a picnic lunch that comes in a basket and some really yummy looking stuff. yummm!

Spam Sux

Saturday, July 23rd, 2005

Three things seem to be the bane of constructive use of the internet. Pornography (see here for related statistics), viruses, and spam. Spam is defined as:

Spam
1: a canned meat made largely from pork
2: unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail

The inedible kind of spam plagues any who dare to post reasonable content on the internet. It’s a constant battle between Good and Evil. The Good side works to prevent, block, outlaw, and ban unsolicited bulk advertisements. The Evil side works ever harder to abuse the system and make cash. The other 95% of people have to deal with the effects when they check their email or get peppered with pop-up windows. Some interesting articles:

The Evils of Spam

As one of the small number of people who host a website/blog/picture gallery themselves, I often deal with spam. People sit at their computers and figure out devious ways to post large amounts of inane data using this blogging system, for example. Then I must either manually delete it or devise a clever way to disallow any access by said offenders.

I actually feel a little sorry for the average PC user. They get a new computer, hook it up to the internet for email, and browse a few sites. Then they start getting spam, malicious viruses that eat their files, pop-up windows… And that’s just the “outside”. If they try to fix any of this, they find that Windows is not as user friendly as they thought. If their hard drive crashes, not only do they lose their data, but they pay someone a lot of money to fix it.

Anyway, there’s my rant on spam and PC’s. Oh, and due to malicious spam on this site I need to approve any comments before they’re posted. If you leave a comment expect a delay before it’s displayed!

Essay “Contest”

Saturday, July 16th, 2005

I have received three essays! Alas, I did not judge impartially. My best friend Nate was here Friday night for the LAN party and I found out he had been wanting one of these things since forever, always on the cusp of buying one. If you could have seen the look on his face!

Nate DID write an essay, and it’s good, but my mind was pretty much made up before he wrote it. With written and verbal apologies to my other contestants, I gave the ipod to him. Neither of them were mad, but I felt bad about getting their hopes up. I suppose I should be more careful before posting that kind of contest on my site! My only excuse is the wording I used – “…will be seriously considered.” Still, I should have been more careful about posting that.

Nate's excited!

If I had had the camera, I would have taken pictures of Nate opening the package. It was priceless.

So without further ado, the essays!

Why Steve Jobs is a Hottie – Becky Wood of Beverly
Why Macs are Near and Dear to My Heart – Tim Frankovich of League City, TX
Why Macs are Near and Dear to My Heart – Nate Daman of Bolton

New ‘Puter

Friday, July 15th, 2005

I ordered a new imac! Yes, I had Jill’s approval. I got to see one in action last night at the Cooper’s – they had me over for a yummy dinner and guitar lesson. They have the same one. You can see what it looks like here. I got the 20-inch version. I expect my neck will get sore due to looking back and forth on it. It’s twice as fast and three times the amount of RAM I currently have. My last computer purchase was three years ago.

We got an education discount because of Jill, and it came with a free ipod mini. I’m wondering what to do with it, since we already have one. Maybe I’ll make it a present to someone near and dear to me :) Maybe I’ll do an essay contest. Yeah, that’s it. The best 1000 word essay on “Why Macs are Near and Dear to My Heart” will be seriously considered for a free ipod mini!

If you don’t like that topic, maybe I’ll also accept “Steve Jobs is a Hottie”. Be sure to mention his typical Keynote attire.

Now I need to move all my stuff around in preparation. Back up the SQL server, move config files for Apache, create user accounts for FTP, do backups, move music collection, etc. This kind of stuff is what geeks live for.
