Supersize Me

Friday, February 25th, 2005

Just watched this movie. Jill and I have also read Fast Food Nation which is about much the same thing – the epedemic of obesity in America and the causes of it. The movie was pretty good, although we could have done without the guy’s girlfriend describing their sex life in detail.

The part about the schools’ connection with the fast food companies would be enough to home school my kids, if I had any. It’s amazing what kids eat for lunch. Also, ever since reading Culture Jam, I have become sensitive to advertisements of any kind (probably overly so – I make Jill mute all the TV commercials now). I could imagine walking into a school and seeing McD. signs and logos and ads everywhere. It’s really not a wonder America is the fattest nation in the world!

A visit to Maine

Thursday, February 24th, 2005

My Mom and I took a little trip up to the 5th most toothless state! We drove up Tuesday evening and returned this afternoon. It was a really great time, and I finally got to see my sisters abode. They are right on the lake in a little house that they’re fixin’ up. Took us about 4 hours to get up there, but the drive really wasnt too bad. Mom and I listened to a book on tape, and I had a the ipod loaded up with good tunes that my mom and I both like, an eclectid mix of Talking Heads, Frank Sinatra, Dire Straits, and praise & worship songs! Among our Maine adventures were shopping, eating out, story telling, touring prefabricated homes, snowmobiling, movie watching, cat petting, and moxie drinking. It was a great trip!Jayne & Newman

Quotes

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

I compiled a list of quotes that I’ve been using for my emails and tweaked a small randomizer script to display a different one every time a page loads. I wasn’t sure where to put the quote, nor if i’ll keep it. It was just a project while the Warcraft server was down :D

Napoleon Dynamite

Sunday, February 20th, 2005

Last night I attended a Napoleon Dynamite viewing at the Woods place. It was a sweeeet time. We had tots and did glamor shots! Becky & Peter were awesome hosts, and was fun to watch the movie with a crowd of enthusiasts. :)

Valentines Day

Tuesday, February 15th, 2005

I enjoyed a good Valentines day :) First, I had it off, which is always nice. Ben had most of it off too, so we just had a nice, leisurely day together. Then we had a young life Valentines night which was really a ton of fun. Then I got back into school and had little (and big) kid’s valentines waiting for me. :) Overall, a fun holiday for kids, but I’m not too into it as an adult. We are not really the buy-clocolates-and-have-to-go-out-to-dinner kind of couple. Simple pleasures suit us, I guess. Right now Ben is reading to me The Great Divorce, by CS Lewis, which is good but kinda a deeper intelectual book than what i am used to. Anyhoo, off to read now! :)

Site Statistics

Tuesday, February 15th, 2005

I found a free site statistics tool today. For those of you that have no idea what that is, it keeps track of questions like:

  1. Who’s visiting my site?
  2. How long did they stay?
  3. Where did they come from, and where are they going?
  4. What browser are they using?
  5. What size screen are they using?
  6. Is the user returning, or is this their first time?

As you can see, these questions are very helpful to web developers who try to bring in traffic to their site. I don’t claim to be a professional in that area, but I do like to see who’s visiting and how they got to our site.

I did take the old counter off, which has been around since 2003 and had about 36,000 hits on it. That was kind of sad, but the truth is a ton of those hits were me or Jill when we were surfing, editing, or blogging to our own site. Since this tool blocks hits from my computer, it should represent a more accurate count of hits from this day forward. Also, the counter is now set to show only unique visitors, not page views. Therefore it will only increment once when someone visits, rather than increment for each section of the site viewed.

A few minutes after I installed the tool, I checked it and found that out of three visitors, two were from far away! I wonder if this ratio will stay like this?

I Object

Sunday, February 13th, 2005

I must post a correction to the previous post. Cats do not “go crazy” as you humans suppose. Rather, we practice diligently for the moment when our deadly claws are in reach of delicious prey. You humans know nothing of the hunt (you get all your food from a store) – we cats must keep our lithe bodies in top condition.

Additionally, when you mentioned those family members you were thankful for, you failed to mention having a feline master who is gracious enough to not eat you in your sleep. Your lack of respect is duly noted.
